Quo Vadis America?
Seven Movements by Roland Who?!
The Quo Vadis America Project
For nearly 30 years, I have been painting pictures that do a world of good for the people who surround themselves with my originals.
And yet! Every evening, when I watch the news on TV, I get the feeling that this isn’t enough. I feel helpless in the face of all the absurd developments I witness.
That’s why, as an artist, I simply had to do something! At the same time, I had to find a way to reach far more people than before so that I could make a difference in the world.
So I created the project: “Quo Vadis America?”
It shows where our societies could be headed if we don’t change anything. Even though I use the American flag as a symbol here, it’s not just about America. The Americans are simply leading the way here—as is so often the case. It’s not enough for us in Western democracies to point the finger at America and otherwise sit back and do nothing.
We need to wake up and realize that, as human beings, we still have the power to shape the kind of society we want to live in. With this project, I want to encourage people to think about this—in America, and just as much in Europe.
The project consists of 7 series, each with 7 paintings. Each series depicts a possible development of American society. All paintings were created in 2025–26. They all measure 105 x 150 cm (41⅓ x 59 inches). They are painted on genuine linen using the purest pigments from Kremer and freshly mixed egg tempera made from eggs and linseed oil. These materials will last for centuries—as, hopefully, will our democracies.
